AGSC 419 - Plant Pathology

(3 units)
This course will start students’ education in the discipline of Plant pathology. Students will be exposed to fundamental concepts of Plant Pathology, different types of diseases and their causes, how microbes/pathogens attack and invade plants, yield losses, plant defense strategies, and disease management. A historical and modern perspective on several approaches – sustainable, technological, and biotechnological - used by scientists and farmers to prevent and circumvent diseases and losses will be emphasized in this course.

Prerequisite(s): BIOL 191A  or AGSC 230  or AGSC 250

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. recall vocabulary words related to the field of plant pathology.
2. communicate commons diseases of agricultural and horticultural crops, identify disease symptoms, describe major pathogen groups, and their life cycles.
3. define the basics of the host-pathogens interactions.
4. understand basic scientific concepts related to genetic engineering technology to understand how its application can be integrated in disease control of commercial plants.
