FIL 211 - Second Year Filipino I

Introduction to the Filipino (Tagalog) language through the development of language skills and through structural analysis. Includes an introduction to Filipino culture.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. participate in conversations covering limited topic areas, such as family and friends, places, the weather, leisure activities, and food.
2. demonstrate ability to use culturally appropriate language in situations that require giving compliments, expressing complaints, feelings and reaction towards an object or event.
3. write and narrate simple descriptions of past, future, and ongoing events.
4. describe places, objects, and people, in written and spoken forms.
5. retell a story from readings and/or multimedia materials (including movies).
6. infer meanings of vocabulary words based on context and background knowledge.
7. demonstrate cultural competence through the use of appropriate verbal and nonverbal expressions in various contexts and awareness of different cultural identities among Filipinos in the Philippines and in the diaspora.
8. understand main ideas from short stories and reading materials and relate them to social and cultural issues affecting their lives.
9. improve their listening skills through engaging with various learning materials that require them to pay attention to linguistic and cultural details embedded in the talk/conversation.
