Dance, B.A.

The major in Dance allows students to engage in the rigorous physical practice of dance training, while simultaneously developing a deep understanding of the historical, cultural and performative lineage that underpins the field of dance. Students pursuing this major will combine the cognitive and kinetic skills necessary to enter the field as dance practitioners, makers, educators, administrators, and/or scholars. In order to balance the artistic, analytical and kinesthetic, Dance majors are doing, making, and studying dance throughout their undergraduate careers with an emphasis on continued reflection and growth as both practitioners and scholars.

Program Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- analyze, discuss, or present on various production elements (e.g. performance, design, direction, choreography, etc.) in oral, written, and/or expressive mediums. (C)
- describe, analyze, and apply geometric and algebraic mathematical equations and/or probability and analytical symbolic systems as used in a variety of production elements (e.g. theatrical design and construction, arts management and scheduling, choreography/composition, music theory, linguistic/poetic analysis, etc.). - identify, analyze, and assess various production elements through the lenses of cultural, historical, and theoretical contexts while developing a disposition toward reflective inquiry. (CT)
- demonstrate competency in dance technique to support performance.
- apply fundamental principles of choreography to their own creative process by demonstrating an understanding of choreographic craft and how it responds to different settings, contexts, and media.
- articulate and trace important political, cultural, and historical trends in dance and analyze dance works in terms of vocabulary, location, and syntax.
- examine and evaluate the artistic, technical, and professional aspects of dance in the production environment.

III. Additional College Requirements (6-20 units)
Units may vary depending on initial course placement in foreign language coursework.
A. World Language Requirement (0-14 units)
Students seeking this bachelor’s degree must demonstrate proficiency in a world language other than English equal to a fourth semester course level through one of the following options:
- complete a fourth semester college course in a world language other than English;
- demonstrate proficiency through a means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures including but not limited to minimum standardized test scores (CBAPE, SAT II, or IB), attaining a minimum aptitude on an accredited world language assessment test, or providing transcript evidence of a high school or equivalent diploma in which English was not the language of instruction; or,
- participate in a study abroad language program pre-approved by the Department of World Languages and Literatures to meet the world language requirement.
Note: Four years of high school world language instruction does not automatically satisfy this requirement.
B. College Breadth Requirement (6 units)
Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, 6 units that are outside the departments in which they major or minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill the Core General Education requirements (Core Objectives 1 through 8).
