SPA 345 - Seminar in Clinical Procedure (2 units) Observation and synthesis of clinical services.
Prerequisite(s): SPA 301 ; SPA 320 ; SPA 340 .
Units of Lecture: 2 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course: 1. Students will be able to demonstrate ability to meet ASHA’s requirement of 25 hours of observing assessment and intervetnion sessions. 2. Students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic layout and clinic operations. 3. Students will be able to develop at a beginning level the skills of observing communication behaviors. e.g., judging social-pragmatic abilities, estimating speech intelligibility and factors negatively affecting intelligibility; identifying and transcribing articulation errors; estimating MLU and usage of grammatical morphemes; judging ability to use language to describe, explain, and retell events; identifying characteristics of voice and fluency. 4. Students will be able to identify communication disorder categories based upon case summary information such as case history and client concerns, assessment results and recommendations, therapy goals and objectives; and informal observation impressions. 5. Students will be able to organize case information and informal observational notes according to a report format. 6. Students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with session designs, test administration, informal assessments, reinforcement strategies, various teaching strategies, means of data collection, behavior management strategies, and varieties of therapy materials.
